Employ a Simple Crisis Management Plan

Having a crisis management plan is critical. The hard work you put into building your business and brand reputation can instantly crumble when a crisis strikes. It doesn’t take long for the dominoes to fall. Whether it’s a lousy customer experience that goes viral, a data breach, or a product recall, how you respond after the crisis to stop the rot is as critical as how you run your business daily ~ Two  minute read.

A Three Step Crisis Management Plan

Mistakes happen. Some are beyond our control, while others are self-inflicted. Regardless of the cause or the audience, here are three simple steps to help you navigate a crisis efficiently. A crisis management plan doesn’t need to be complicated…just effective.

1. Acknowledge the Problem

One of the worst things a business can do is deny there’s an issue. Everyone makes mistakes, but addressing the situation openly and honestly is crucial when communicating with your audience.  Even when a customer is upset, acknowledging their perspective and admitting that their experience didn’t meet expectations can go a long way in defusing tension. Customers crave transparency.

2. Fix It

After identifying the problem and understanding what went wrong, it’s essential to communicate the steps you’re taking to rectify the situation and prevent it from happening again. This shows your customers that you’re taking ownership and are committed to resolving the issue positively. Communication is key.

3. Move Forward

Once you’ve addressed the issue to the best of your ability, it’s important to refocus on your company’s goals and initiatives. While offering a one-time discount to affected customers can be a good gesture, continually drawing attention to the mistake is of little benefit. Sometimes moving on is the only way to move on.

Employ a Simple Crisis Management Plan

Many inspiring quotes speak to the resilience of getting back up after a fall. Customers can be forgiving, and businesses can thrive if they navigate crises thoughtfully and honestly. But, isn’t it better to be proactive rather than reactive? Here’s one of those inspiring quotes to persuade you to maybe put a crisis management plan in place: “If you don’t want the last domino to fall, don’t let the first.”

While your business can’t plan for every landmine, why not have a simple crisis management plan in your back pocket just in case? What’s more, there are ways to reduce the risk of a crisis happening in the first place, to stop that first domino from falling. As a business consultant, I have years of experience helping business owners grow their businesses in a risk reduced environment with a flexible, personable, and non-judgmental approach.
