Even Business Owners Need Downtime

Excerpt: Employees aren’t the only ones who can feel burnout. For most business owners, it is a 24/7 endeavor. Those with the mindset that they cannot take time away from their business may want to think again. 1-minute read

I recently was asked if I take vacations, and the answer was YES!

Like all business owners, I need to step away from the business now and then. Doing so helps me reset, refresh my energy, and spark creativity. When we are in day-to-day mode, we tend to make decisions based on what is immediately in front of us. That instinct allows us to move quickly on to the next thing…instead of having the space to think about the alternative options available to us.

Business Owners – It’s Time to Recharge!

I’m sure I’m not the first business owner who has made a decision, and then with the benefit of hindsight, wished I’d taken the time to think things through more. Hindsight is 20/20 after all, right? With hindsight you realize that maybe you could have made a different choice that would have saved money, been more efficient, or maybe both!

Sometimes a break, a long weekend here or a week there, is just what you need to regain that clarity of thought. Anything that runs on batteries needs a recharge from time to time…and as humans, our brains definitely run on batteries!

Time to Unplug?

Technology can be a blessing and a curse when taking a vacation. If you can, especially for a short time, I recommend letting your team handle the business and completely unplug. Even if it is for a day, you will feel liberated by focusing on something other than your business. If completely unplugging is impossible, put on your out-of-office and select a few times a day when you check email and voice mail. While my husband has gotten better about unplugging, he hasn’t been able to cut the cord yet. So he will work a few hours early in the morning, then spend the rest of the day enjoying wherever we are.

Not only does taking a vacation provide significant mental health benefits, but it will also energize you for your business upon your return. Not to mention setting a great example to your employees that there is a balance of work and play and, more importantly, that you trust them to take care of the business while you are gone.

So, are you ready to plan your next vacation?

If you’ve read this and thought, “There’s no way I can take time off, Kimberly?” then you may not be managing your own business growth effectively. If your business can’t handle you taking a few days off, what happens if you find yourself unable to work through ill health or an accident? If a business can’t survive without you – just for a few days – that is not an ideal position for a business owner to find themselves in.

If that resonates with you, it may be time to gain an outside perspective. As a business consultant, I’ve spent years helping business owners grow their businesses in a way that works for them. You should be running your business – your business should NOT be running you.
